Meet the Editor: Deborah Needleman

by Deborah Needleman

Hometown: The dark wilds of suburban New Jersey.

Occupation: Editor, writer.

Favorite destinations: Italy, Harbor Island, Bahamas; Greece, and my sitting room in upstate New York.

Dying to visit: India, Turkey, Morocco.

Bizarre travel rituals: Look through and consider every item of clothing I own, stealing ambien from my husband, packing own soap and scented candles.

In-flight relaxation regime: Drinking and drugs.

Always in carry-on: Way too much.

Concierge or DIY? I believe strongly in service personnel.

See it all or take it easy? One day of one followed by the other.

Drive or be driven? See above.

Travel hero: Edith Wharton.

Weirdest thing seen on travels: People taking picture in front of famous monuments.

Best hotel amenity: When the front desk doesn't have a ten-minute rehearsed greeting every time you ring.

I dream about my meal at a fish restaurant on the sea in Ios, Greece.

Everywhere I go, I check out the flower shops and public gardens.

When I arrive in a new place, I learn the lay of the land by hoping someone I'm with has figured it out.

I always bring home foreign baby clothes for babies I know.

If I never return to Turks and Caicos it'll be too soon because it seemed so fake.

I travel for the getting-out-of-my-normal-life of it.
