Meet the Hotelier: John Voigtmann

by John Voigtmann

Hometown: Pienza, Italy.

Occupation: Hotelier.

Favorite destinations: Todos Santos, Mexico; Siracusa, Italy; Kep, Cambodia; Cartagena, Colombia.

Dying to visit: Burma.

Bizarre travel rituals: Tapping my wedding ring on the entrance of the plane door. EVERY TIME.

In-flight relaxation regime: Eye shades, earplugs, nasal moisturizer.

Always in carry-on: Neck pillow, iPad, and my two-year-old.

Concierge or DIY? DIY for sure.

See it all or take it easy? Take it easy.

Drive or be driven? I love to drive, even in the craziest of places.

Travel hero: Bruce Chatwin.

Weirdest thing seen on travels: Skittish post-traumatic-stress suffering elephants in Mozambique.

Best hotel amenity: Open air, private hotel tub at the Casa Jaguar villa at Imanta in Punta Mita, Mexico.

I dream about my meal at La Pineta, Marina di Bibbona, Tuscany.

Everywhere I go, I check out the local street markets.

When I arrive in a new place, I learn the lay of the land by taking a long walk.

I always bring home match books. (I travel light.)

If I never return to Houston, it'll be too soon because I could never get rental car over the 26-lane highways in time to make the exits.

I travel for the fun of it.
