What Sally Horchow Travels For

by Sally Horchow

Hometown: Los Angeles

Occupation: Writer

Favorite destinations: Nantucket, Aspen, New Orleans, Iceland, Capri.

Dying to visit: South Africa.

Bizarre travel rituals: Always get an oxygen tank delivered when traveling to altitude. Usually BYO tea bags.

In-flight relaxation regime: Ambien.

Always in carry-on: iPhone charger, Kiehl's Lip Balm.

Concierge or DIY? Concierge executing my plan.

See it all or take it easy? See it all.

Drive or be driven? Be driven.

Weirdest thing seen on travels: An angry couple outside the American Airlines Admiral's Club complaining that they had to "wait in line to get in to OUR CLUB." Like it was their country club in Boca or something.

Best hotel amenity: LP library and in-room record player at the Hotel St. Cecilia in Austin.

I dream about my meal at Gran Hotel Son Net, Mallorca — room service, first night of our honeymoon.

Everywhere I go, I check out the farmer's market and locals' favorite restaurant.

When I arrive in a new place, I learn the lay of the land by taking a walk.

I always bring home paper products and artisanal foodstuffs.

If I never return to US Highway 70 across Kansas it'll be too soon because it's flat, boring, and takes FOREVER!

I travel for the creative inspiration and to get a new perspective on life. Which means I usually travel for the food (and for the exercise/activity that makes me feel I deserve it).
