Route to take: Follow I-35E S and I-35S for three hours towards Austin.

Your agenda: Book a room overlooking the shores of Colorado River at Lake Austin Spa Resort. Just 40 minutes from downtown Austin, the luxury resort is the place to go for rest and relaxation. SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

If you're in the mood for: A vibrant city with a colorful history and strong culinary scene.

Route to take: Drive down I-35E S and I-35 S for four and half hours until you hit San Antonio.

Your agenda: Check into the newly opened Roman and Williams-designed Hotel Emma. Built inside an old brewhouse, the industrial-chic hotel is part of a larger cultural village on the site of what was formerly the Pearl Brewery. Dress the part in a custom-made guayabera from Dos Carolinas. (Designer Caroline Matthews is also responsible for the light blue seersucker robes at Hotel Emma.) The local food scene is top-notch: Start with globally inspired barbecue and craft beers at The Granary.

Avoid the Sunday blues: Skip the state's most famous battle site and spend your last day floating down the Guadalupe River with an Alamo Golden Ale in hand.

ALYS BEACH, FLORIDA

If you're in the mood for: A dreamy beach escape with Mediterranean-style buildings, white sand beaches, and crystal clear blue water.

Route to take: Opt out of the twelve-hour drive and book a two-hour flight into nearby Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS).

Your agenda: One of sixteen beach neighborhoods situated in the Florida Panhandle, Alys Beach is ideal for family vacations. Three, four, and five bedroom cottages are available to rent and include access to community spaces like the saltwater pool, a 20-acre nature preserve, and nine parks. If you don't want to cook on your holiday, Fonville Press makes a mighty fine latte and George's has a coastal menu divided into sections titled "behave" and "misbehave." If you're feeling naughty, save room for Warm Chocolate Toffee Goo, a dessert made with sweet cream ice cream, chocolate sauce, and chocolate mousse.

Avoid the Sunday blues: Rent a bicycle at Alys Beach Bike Shop and cruise the 19-mile paved path that meanders the length of Highway 30A.
